The Masters Program

Two years. Nine session days. A lifetime of impact.

The GNL Masters Program is unlike any other leadership experience in Collier County. Over two immersive years, members gain an insider’s understanding of the community they call home—its history, its challenges, and the people and organizations working to shape its future.

Applications for the Masters Program open in October and must be completed online. A link to the application will be posted on this website in mid October. Online applications are accepted until the end of December or until the limit is reached. Watch this space for more information.

About the Masters Program

Year 1: Learn

The first year immerses participants in Collier County through nine full-day sessions, each dedicated to a different dimension of community life—from healthcare and education to environment, government, and the arts. Participants engage directly with influential civic, business, and nonprofit leaders, visit the organizations driving change, and conclude each session with a deeper understanding of what the community needs and how experienced leaders can contribute.

Session topics include: History & Culture, Education, Healthcare, Environment, Cultural Arts, Human Services, Government, Growth & Economic Development, and Immokalee.

Year 2: Lead

The second year is dedicated to putting Year One knowledge into practice. As members of a Session Day Planning Team, participants collaborate to design and lead one of the program’s signature learning days for the incoming class, applying their expertise, expanding their influence, and shaping the experience for future GNL leaders.

Year Two culminates in a graduation ceremony recognizing completion of the Masters Program and a sustained commitment to Collier County.

Beyond the Masters Program

Completion of the Masters Program is just the beginning of your GNL journey.

Masters Program Details

Eligibility

Record of accomplishment: Ideal Masters Program candidates have demonstrated leadership in their field—whether in business, nonprofit, or civic life—and bring a strong track record of meaningful contribution to the community. GNL members are primarily retired or semi-retired professionals, business leaders, and community leaders who have the time and desire to learn more about the needs of Collier County and wish to make a meaningful difference through community service.

Selection Guidelines

Commitment to the Greater Naples community: Candidates are evaluated on their accomplishments, leadership record, and commitment to become actively involved in the community through nonprofit and civic engagement, as well as through GNL committees and Board service.

Time and readiness to engage: Candidates must have the time, interest, and capability to participate fully in Year One’s day-long classes and in the planning and preparation of a session day for the following year’s class.

Requirements to Participate

Participation in the Masters Program is a two‑year commitment.

Year One: Learning

Masters Program members may not miss more than two Session Days. Any missed Session Days must be made up within two years.

Year Two: Leading

Masters Program members must fulfill the requirement to participate in the planning and execution of an assigned Session Day.

Masters Program Graduation

Masters Class members who have not met these requirements will not graduate from the Masters Program and will cease to become members of GNL.

Post‑graduation commitment

Graduates of the two-year Masters Program are expected to carry out GNL’s mission: to educate and inspire a network of service-minded leaders to impact positive change in our community. If not already, Masters Program graduates are expected to volunteer with a nonprofit or civic organization in the Collier County area and/or with GNL by serving on one of its committees, and encouraged to sponsor worthy candidates for membership.

Application Process

Generally, an applicant for admission to the Masters Program is sponsored by a current GNL member; however, a sponsor is not required and self‑nomination is welcomed.

Applications are available on the GNL website in mid-October and remain open until the application limit is reached. Two Membership Committee members jointly conduct an in-person (not virtual) interview with each applicant. After interviews, applications and feedback are submitted to a confidential Selection Committee, which is tasked with reviewing the membership application, feedback and selecting the candidates for the Masters Class. Class selection is announced in February.

Upon acceptance, Masters Program members are required to sign and submit a liability release.

Interview Guidance: Tips for Sponsors and Candidates

Each candidate takes part in a thoughtful, structured in-person, not virtual interview to confirm a strong fit with the nine-month Masters Program. GNL Selection Committee leaders review each interview to build a well-balanced class of engaged, service-minded members.

The sponsorship process is a vital component of candidate selection. Sponsors are encouraged to identify individuals who exemplify leadership, integrity, and a sincere commitment to community service. Each candidate is carefully interviewed to ensure that they are well suited for the Master Class nine-month program. The following key points are provided to assist both the sponsor and the candidates in preparing for the interview and in understanding the expectations associated with membership in Greater Naples Leadership.

Sponsorship Responsibility
Sponsors are encouraged to discuss the MC program’s time commitment and the expectations with the candidate prior to nomination.

Eligibility and Commitment
Candidates should demonstrate leadership within their past (or current) profession or community. It is vital that they possess the time and willingness to participate fully in the nine-month program. Attendance and active engagement are essential to the success of both the individual and the class.

Interview Preparation
The interview provides an opportunity for both the candidate and the interviewers (2) to confirm alignment with the organization’s mission and values. Candidates should be on time, and will be asked not to mention the name of their sponsor. They should be prepared to discuss their current or past involvement in their communities, leadership experiences, and interest in the program.

Computer Capabilities
The candidates should have basic computer skills. All documents are developed and communicated online. All resource documents and past Session Day Meeting packets are online. No hard copies are used.

Professional and Ethical Conduct
Candidates accepted to participate in the Masters Class should demonstrate respect, and professionalism in all class activities. The MC values open dialogue and diverse viewpoint expressed with civility.

Tuition, Payment, and Refunds

If prior to July 1, an accepted Masters Class member requests to withdraw from the Masters Class program after having paid tuition, one half of the tuition may be refunded. No tuition will be refunded after July 1.

If an accepted Masters Class member requests to defer to the following year, and if that request is approved, tuition in full must be paid and will be applied to the following year. Any subsequent increase in tuition will also be charged. Exceptions due to unique hardships may be considered. The deferred class member will not be eligible for a refund of their paid tuition fee, if the deferred class member chooses to withdraw at any time thereafter.
